My name is Allison Durazzani and I'm the school counselor here at Wellsville Elementary. I love my job as an elementary school counselor and I'm excited to get to know your kiddos at school! I get to work with students through individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom lessons. The elementary years are a critical time for students to develop and practice many life-long skills. My role as a school counselor is to work with students to help them learn these skills and help them feel happy and successful here at school. I focus on helping students with a variety of areas in their lives, including social, emotional, and academic needs.
Students can be referred to me through multiple ways. Most often, students are referred by teachers or parents, but I do have students that will also ask to come visit with me. I am able to visit with a student once, but I do need parent permission to continue working with students here at school beyond that initial visit.
I'm so lucky that I get to work with all the amazing students here at Wellsville Elementary through classroom lessons. I visit each classroom once a month. Our lessons focus on a wide range of topics from kindness to stress management. My goal is to help all of our students feel confident and capable of handling the different challenges they may face.
I also work with students on a one-on-one basis. Topics we might discuss during these sessions include friendship skills, coping with emotions such as anxiety or anger, problem solving skills, mindfulness, and other subjects that might be helpful for student success at school. As previously mentioned, if I work with a student on a regular basis, parent permission is needed. I typically meet with students once a week for 15-20 minutes and I try hard to coordinate with teachers so that I am not interrupting classroom learning.
It is important to note, my purpose at school is not to provide therapy, but to teach students various coping strategies that can help with the social and emotional struggles they may be facing at school. If you are interested in outside community resources, I can help connect you with those resources.
